Jet Harris RIP

J
An
et AHarris, The Shadows bassist, dies aged 71
Harris is reputed to be one of the first musicians in the UK to play the bass guitar in the UK
Jet Harris, the original bass player with The Shadows, has died of cancer aged 71.
The guitarist, who played on number one hits including Apache, died
at his partner's home in Winchester, his agent Peter Stockton said.
Sir Cliff Richard paid tribute to his former bandmate, saying: "Jet
was exactly what The Shadows and I needed - a backbone holding our sound
together."
Earlier this month, Harris cancelled all his appearances due to ill health.
Another good 'un gone. I remember seeing Jet Harris and Tony
Meehan down the Pav'. Jet was a small man with a big bass guitar and he
was one of the best bass guitars around then.

Cripes only 71! Even an anorak like myself recalls Jet
and the sound of that guitar. I was only playing 'Apache' a few days
back, the old '45' still runs well (not really it is the 'Bose'
thingy-me-jig' now!!) Why do the useful people pop-off so young and yet
we cannot get rid of certain politicians in Libya & Zimbabwe
(Rhodesia actually in my book!). I hope the harps can match that earthly
instrument Jet.

Sad news that ! Jet was the first Bass Player I was
aware of and who I copied. I remember spending the hours when i should
have been doing homework trying to learn Nivram from an LP (remember
them? ) on an old Dansette record player. RIP Jet.
I hope everyone's OK I've been up to my eyes lately but am still
thankfully around !!

Hi all. I was also saddened to hear of the death of
Jet Harris. It's strange really that we all knew about Jet when he
played with the Shads and Cliff. I can't recall another band where the
bass player was as well known. Another icon sadly gone, Jet will be
sadly missed. Sticky.

Just wondered if the picture is really Bruce Welch? That
hairstyle makes it hard to tell! Thank goodness Brylcreme (sp?) is a
thing of the past.

Sorry guys been a bit busy lately, I suppose
'Apache' was one of the first pieces of pop I caught on to, brilliant
lead line but the underpining of the bass really set it off, shame the
guy never really realised his true potential, when a few years later
bass players were as well known and respected as the singers and
guitarists in bands, i.e. Paul McCartney, John Entwhistle and John Paul
Jones.

The trouble with Jet, Stu was that he succumbed to the
demon drink and became very unreliable. It's sad really because he was
there at the beginning and should have been so much bigger. But he
wasn't the first or the last to have his demons spoil things.

Hi Anth.
Nice to hear from you again. Grahams entry for Jet Harris' obituary is in the photo album!!!!!!!!
What's this I hear on the news about a pot of roman coins found in Frome going to Taunton museum.
Tweren't in your back garden that they found 'em was it? No wonder
we haven't heard from you of late, working out how to spend the
millions, eh?
Have fun.
Sticky.
PS I bet her indoors could help with suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!

No not me, but the hoard was found less than two
miles from my house as the crow flies, if you log on to Wikimapia and
type in treasure in the category drop down list while looking at the
Frome area it will come up as a red dot to the east of Frome
