Hi Graham, Stu and all.
What's all this talk about Constantinople (Whoops! Istanbul),
Graham, and who is this bird Sue Nami you are trying to escape from.
Does the management know about this?
I will admit that I envy you the peace and quiet of Biddestone on a warm summer afternoon.
Ah well, back to Burnley at some ungodly hour in the morning so
best be brief I s'pose. Hopefully we shall finish there by
Wednesday night but back to Stoke on Trent then.
I believe you were all correct in the assumption that there were
football matches on this week end, Sainsburys was heavenly on Saturday
and things went very quiet today.
Ah well, have to go.
Have fun.
Sticky.

Good morning
A crete Stu is what people up North put their bottles of brown ale in. Aye up lad.
What a night (and morning!). Finally made it home safe and sound.
It was a fantastic party and it was great to be part of it. My
good lady is a bit more fragile than me this morning, but I must say
this is probably only the third time thats happened in our 30 years
together!!!
Well thats it for another 4 years, just Christmas to look forward to now.
Is Rich alive and well, all very quiet from our Twerton member.
Cheers

Hi All.
Yes Steve, I'm alive and well thanks, just not into footie or oily
stuff I'm afraid. The Pork Pie bit was a bit tempting and when you
mentioned 38 C I got a bit hot under the collar until I realised you
meant temperature not a bra size !! Never mind. I enjoy all the waffle
on here but if I don't know 'owt about it I keep quiet. I canmake a
complete chump of myself with stuff I do know, let alone stuff I don't
!! I trust you had a suitably self inflicted hang over this morning so
I'm typing this very quietly.
Regards to all,
Rich

Well done to Spain. Now the 'bread & circuses' bit
is over the normal stony-broke gloom can return. Hope the hangover can
be repeated now the team is back. Hair of the dog? Notice no footie
terms from me as I am well out of my depth too. Not sure where in
Crete until her indoors tells me. North coast near Knossos I hope. As
Santorini has been quiet since about 1400BC we may not get washed away
in a tidal wave. Even the recent (?) change of name to Istanbul (was
that a song?) in Turkey survived any eruptions. The scenes in various
James Bond movies make it look like an interesting place. If this thread continues we might make 96 (might live that long!!) Saw some great pork pies at the French market in Corsham on Saturday. The European effect? Graham

Knossos is amazing Graham, best visited around
lunchtime, it may be the hottest part of the day but most people have
gone for lunch and you can get the place almost to yourself, no hoardes
of German tourists. Having said that you don't want to be based too
close, Iraklion one way Malia and Hersonassus the other. Hania's at the
western end of the island's nice, brilliant old town lots of little
winding streets to get lost in with some brilliant tavernas and the
venetian harbour must be one of the most picturesque places in the med,
found a great record shop in Hania back street too selling long since
deleted english vinyl, came home with a caseful, much to the wifes
disgust. If your hiring a car some of the mountain roads in the central
to western end have some amazing scenery and usually little traffic,
you'll find the cretans generally like english people as well, we always
found that once they realised you weren't german the hospitality
increased tremendously, had some very happy holidays there.

Chaps, Thanks for the advice. I have always wanted to
see Knossos, but it seems we will stay at Rethymnon and a hire car is
part of the deal. Will check out the towns, tavernas & back streets
too. Sadly I gather antique weapons cannot be exported without amazing
Greek paperwork!! Perhaps 78s might have been a better choice. I recall
that fad for moulding them into flowerpots in the 60s. Mine went that
way! Recall a 60s holiday to Italy. Plane & then coach. Bus from
hotel was always full of Germans when we arrived. One day the Italians
got their own back. Two buses pulled up. Krauts dived into the best
seats of the front one. Drivers waited and then said to the few Brits,
"Sorry, that one is going to ??? and is not for your trip. Sit in the
back coach please!" Germans were not amused! Joe Cannon would be
proud of your French. I never did learn much, but still shout in English
and wave my hands about! I am the cretin!!! Learned that on a Tech trip
to Bad Honnef in 1959. I was on the French course but went on the
German trip anyway. The Youth Hostel had a bar downstairs with a black
& white TV playing old Nazi newsreels sometimes. We packed in and
sang "Rule Britannia" every time we saw a Tommy. Got forcibly ejected by
some scar-faced characters who seemed to say, "Vee vill zay thees only
vunce!" Don't panic I only looked at the French pork pies! Their pate was much more to my taste. Graham

I used to enjoy the pate en croute which was as close to
a pork pie that any of the French shops we visited could get to a pork
pie but on getting home one taste of the real thing and there is no
comparison, let the French stick to their omelettes and we keep to our
Melton Mobray,s.

Quite fond of a crepe personally, is that how you spell it ?
Rethimnon's nice Graham, and really handily placed for touring,
Iraklion and Knossos about an hour to the east and Hania about an hour
to the west, and one of the main roads through the mountains to the
south coast starts at Rethimnon, it's an ideal base.

Good news then Stu & Tony. Judy does it again! She
gave up letting me plan foreign trips after we ended up in 10 different
collectors' homes during a 5 week USA holiday! She even spent 3 days in a
hotel once while I was at a gun show in LA! Did not want to come to the
show but was too nervous to explore alone as well. Did make up socially
in the evenings. Had one great Mexican meal with a Texan, a German and
ourselves, but that is another story! Now I just go along as the driver.
Agree about the French crepes. Those crepe houses (good job I spelled it okay!) in France are a delight. Graham

Hi All,
Yes I am still kicking.
Stuffed up my computer system for a week or more and when I got
it back and my wife had finished it was just in time to go on two
weeks holidays. Did not know which discussion to come in on there
has been so much going on. Not much of a gardener and what with
water restrictions and expensive water it is hard work and expensive to
grow ones own produce here. But of course we do, but tis mainly flowers
and shrubs with a few vegies. When my tomatoes and lettuce
are good they are at there cheapest in the market (not as good mind
you). Put down a ton of pavers a few years back to replace
one lawn and a deck to half replace another lawn. Although the
experts say you need only water them (lawns) once a week, mine would get
burnt off in two days if not watered and you really had to pump it in.
Well unlike a lot of you guys I am right into the sport. Watched a
lot of the world cup although it was in the middle of the night
here. The expectations placed on our Socceroos was
enormous considering only three play in the Premier League and most
in the lower leagues or with European clubs at a lesser
level. However, football or soccer as tis called here is
certainly catching on and trying for the big time. We have a
national league of full/part time professionals and it is getting pretty
good support. I think in this town for female’s football is the
biggest sport with well over 10,000 players and edging out the
netball and other sports that girls play in winter.
Watching Le Tour currently but again most of it live
is very late at night and into the early morning. Cannot
say I am much into the Rugby, there are so many stoppages it slows
the action right down. Aust is probably up for a few beltings in
the up coming games against the Springboks and the All Blacks. But
if the truth were known we just don't have the forward depth in
this sport. Rugby League is all the rage here and a much faster
and more professional sport, and hardly any stoppages.
Well that’s my lot for now. Cheers Ken
