Hi Bill
Don't forget bucket and spade and all the pennies you have saved
for the slot machines on the pier!! Does that bring back any memories
for anybody?
Have a relaxing time in plenty of sunshine Bill.
Cheers

Memories Steve, absolutely, I can just about
remember last weekend, haha, seriously though it was always that grab
crane that never managed to pick up anything, must have spent pounds
trying to get a bar of chocolate, would've been cheaper to buy one, but
that wouldn't have had any competative edge, right? I've still got a
bucket and spade, trouble is now use 'em for planting spuds etc.
Have a good time Bill, plenty of sun, beer and pasties eh?

I think the classic machine was the one that you rolled a
penny down the shute onto a reciprocating shelf so that it forced
the pile of pennies, that were stacked at impossible angles, over the
edge and out of the hatch at the front, in those days even if you only
had two bob it was twenty four chances.

There were the small calibre gallery & air rifles
that shot at moving hinged metal plates like ducks on a track, or
playing cards too. When you worked out how they had bent the barrel
(several goes) you got lucky. Recall presenting Mum with a hideous
pressed glass vase for Christmas one year that I had got this way.
Embarrassing as it stayed on display for years! Graham

Hi All,
I've not made much comment on the footie
as I'm not a fan especially as her indoors wanted to watch England while
we were in Corfu. Luckily someone had some paint for me to watch dry so
all was not lost !! For what it's worth I reckon Holland or The
Netheregions as they are now called will win it. Now that's put the
black spot on them !!
Pork Pies.........ah one of lifes simple
pleasures accompanied by a pint and some good strong English mustard.
After the mention of pork pies I couldn't help but notice the
variation in prices for the same pie, namely Ginsters. In Cornwall at
the BP station at Victoria a pie was £1.25. In the Esso station in
Exeter it was £1.85. Not the same pie you understand but one of the
same. Well blow me, when I went into Exeter services, also a BP they
wanted £2.25 for the same ruddy pie !!!!Now , how much do Ginsters
charge the outlets? More to the point how much ruddy profit do some of
these places make? Scandalous isn't it? I think one of the nicest pork
pies I've had was locally made and sold at the BP petrol station in
Yeovil. Lovely pastry, good filling and a lovely drop of jelly too.
Right
that's that. Enjoy the footie lads and, by the way, have you seen the
price of chitterlings these days? Now that's an expensive tit bit !!!

Bad luck Steve, some might say so much for the
evils of gambling, but I'll down a pint for you by way of commiseration,
al least you can still cheer on Spain.

Wow , right up to the end I thought they might force a
draw, I think the Netherlands second goal was borderline offside but its
to late now, hard luck Steve, nearly did it but as Stu said at least
you can cheer on Spain, not the same wthout a bit of dosh on it though
is it.

Hi lads
Thanks for commiserations, some you win some you lose. Thought
Uruguay were a little unlucky, goal was offside but Holland played very
well. Had a good night though with plenty of cold beer, retired about 2
a.m Could be later tonight if Spain win, the locals will not go to
bed!!!!
Looking forward to siesta now.
Cheers
Steve
PS Good to see you are back with us Rich, I was beginning to wonder where you had got to!

Tough luck Steve. One road in Biddestone has the German
flag flying high! A WW2 prisoner of war sent here married a Land Army
girl and never went home. Does he know something this time? Those
pork pies made by Harris's in Calne (factory now demolished) are the
ones I recall, although some farmers' market ones are just as good. As
for pasties, there is a place on the Lizard in Cornwall that is tops for
me. You have to reserve them at least 24 hours in advance! Last time we
went I brought a cool bag and took a load home for the freezer. The
best I ever had was home cooked by a mate's Mum in Newlyn. It filled an
oval fish dish exactly and was a meal alone. With some pints in the
Tolcarne Inn it was an evening to remember. Her indoors would not allow
it today as I must be a few Stones heavier than I was then! A night in a Spanish bar sounds good to me (even without the paint drying!!) I don't have shares in either place lads. Just check these out in person! http://www.annspasties.co.uk/ http://www.tolcarneinn.talktalk.net/ Graham

Hi Graham
Without a shadow of doubt the best pasties are to be had in The Turk's Head,
St. Agnes, Isles of Scilly. Made fresh every morning but order on
arrival as they are very popular, One of the most beautiful views to
enjoy a pint and pasty.

Making my entrance to the 'Great Pastie' debate
I've got to make a claim for Blackwell's pasties, available from their
shop in Meddon Street, Bideford, they advertise them as 'Devon pasties,
not Cornish pasties', can't claim to find any difference myself, except
that they're delicious, and only £1.70 each.
Interesting one, we were talking about slot machines a day or two
ago, one of my responsibilities at work is liasing with the travelling
funfairs when they visit some of our local towns. I suppose that we were
somewhat in awe and perhaps a bit of fear of the people that operated
and worked in the travelling fairs when we were young, but I've found
them to be a great bunch of people. I was lucky enough to be invited
into one of their caravans a day or two ago, I say caravan you could
have entertained the Queen in there, a camper will never look the same
again. The whole thing was based on a large arctic, with slide out
sections, and probably, no definately, cost more than the average small
house, as the owner explained 'It's our home', even though they own a
large detatched house in Plymouth. Strange how your perceptions of
people like this are coloured by your youth, and perceptions of
conventionality,
Thinking of this reminded me of an occasion in the mid 70's, does
anyone else remember Ronnie Lane and his band playing in a circus tent
at Lambridge, I can remember going, still got the programme, but can't
remember the gig, can any one else ?
Stu
PS. Had to edit this as a few snifters down the line the old spelling gets a bit iffy.

Morning Stu
Memory cells are a bit disarranged this morning after being in a
Spanish bar last night!! Will I survive Sunday night/Monday morning?
Must check paracetemol.
As regards Lambridge I have a faint recollection but no more. As a
matter of interest what was the date? I can also vaguely recall seeing
some American 'car' circus on Lambridge. Customised trucks driving over
each other, that sort of thing, I seem to recall.
Shame memory man Bill is on holiday!!!
Cheers

Well done Spain. Will now have a mission to check out a
Devon pastie! All in the cause of research of course! Grew up in
Larkhall across the road from Lambridge. Just recall Billy Smart's
Circus used to visit on a regular basis. Very politically incorrect now
but enjoyed the lions, elephants and cowboy shoot outs! Suspect the turf
is hallowed now as Bath Rugby's training ground. Graham

Only painted on the side of a lorry, along with
Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochrane and the Beatles, funny how some things just
don't change. I was talking to some of the girls at work today, they're
all about 30 years younger than us, but it's funny how we have the same
stories about growing up even though we'ree a generation apart.
Must get a refill Stu
