Hi everybody
I have to change the subject!!! Sorry Sticky and Ant, old ruins of
tunnels and piles of bricks do not do it for me. What happened to sex,
booze and rock n' roll?
Surely somebody else has noticed that there is a small football
competition going on at the moment. My loyalties are torn to between
England, Spain and Uraguay. You may ask "why Uraguay?" but a £5 bet at
100/1 has me cheering them quietly. Have you all been down the pub
cheering on England? At least the landlords and brewing industry are
happy!! Your adopted team Ken, the Roo's, were unlucky and it was a
close call that England would have had to play them in the next round.
Would just have had to win the football game as well as the cricket and
rugby!!!! The Australian sporting nation must be down-hearted at the
moment. I guess it will really pi** them off if New Zealand qualify for
knock-out stages!!
Summer has really kicked in now with wall to wall sunshine and
temperatures regularly nudging 40. I realise UK is enjoying some
good weather and long may it last. What I wouldn't give to be down
Glastonbury in this weather! Still I will just have to watch TV
coverage.
Must go now and iron the Spanish T-shirt ready for tomorrow's game.
Come on England and Spain and Uraguay!!!!!
Cheers
Steve

great quantity .. even Glastonbury had the big screens on and over
100,000 are already there for this coming festival glued to the efforts
of England on the pitch. I am not a football fan, Rugby .. I can have in
small doses, Cricket .. bores the t**s off me (and the wife .. I reckon
it`s how hers shrunk so small .. ha ha).
Glad to hear
temperatures are high for you, too b****y hot for my balding head !! ..
but hey .. there may be football fans on here .. let`s see shall we?

Yes we were lucky again to edge through one more stage,
what is it about the English, are we struggling or showboating like the
wrestlers in the seventies, can we deliver a crafty knockout, good job
the F1 is on this weekend, Lewis and Jenson , british team, drivers,
chassis, shame that its a german engine in the back.

Hi all.
Yes I can certainly see where Steve is coming from regarding the
deep discussions about piles of bricks, and agree entirely with his
question 'What happened to sex booze and rock and roll'. I'm afraid that
this is the point we part company, because I agree with Bill Williams'
thoughts on football and other sports.
At least you know where you are with a pile of old bricks, or sex, booze and rock and roll for that matter.
The old bricks is going nowhere, the rest, as far as I can
remember, just make you red in the face and short of breath, anybody
know any different????
As far as German engines go Anth, Ive got nothing against them
myself. I'm probably teaching Granny to suck eggs, but did youy know
that Porche made rather good tractors in their time and Deutz still turn
out a fine air cooled power unit, fitted to most Fendt tractors. Whilst
on the subject of Johnny Foreigner did you realise that Lamborghini
started their business as agricultural engineers and still build a fine
tractor, if you are rich enough to afford one!!!!
Bugger, I've strayed off the subject again. What a shame!!!!!
Back to reality, yes, Glastonbury. Personally I love listening to
music, but perhaps Glastonbury is not the place to do it for people of a
certain age. To me it seems to be a bit of an endurance test to almost
hear someone who may or may not be famous. I'd sooner listen to half
decent reproduction of what I want to hear in the comfort of our front
room at minimal cost. Not only that, you have to look at it from the
cows point of view, look at what all those thousands of people are doing
in their food!!!!!!
Have fun all.
Sticky.
PS. Having just read this I realise what a miserable old fart I have become!!!!
Fancy saying something like this about Glastonbury. I guess I'm showing my age.
I have some very happy memories of the place, not the festival though, the shoe factories!

Hi Chaps, I am another dissenter over football, and even
the recreational sports require more appreciation than activity
than once they did. (No blue pills though!) The three kids look
askance if I ever make an 'off' remark! To me 90 minutes admiring old bricks is far more fun than the 'beautiful game'. For
my sins as a primary schoolmaster I had to ref. many matches, either as
'manager' or at interschool events. Little did the kids know that I had
never played (except for a few Boy Scout teams) and cared even less. I
think the only match I have ever attended was a Schoolboy International
at Twerton Park. I think Jimmy Edwards dragged us all there one
afternoon? To put my interest in perspective. My first post was
Assistant Master at Colerne Primary School. As a 21 year old male I
spent hours on that freezing pitch when the mistresses were snugly
(smugly?) taking the girls for needlework! One day I saw something glint
on the pitch in the middle of a game. I blew up for some pretended foul
and quickly picked up the object before carrying on. It was a Bronze
Age flint arrowhead! I have it still. Biggest problem with the game
was all the hugging and kissing (TV coverage on the news only shows
this!) that the kids thought was soccer! How come with all those Public
School chaps who played rugby that it is football that gives the wrong
idea of sex & rock 'n' roll!!! Graham

Its not the quality of the engine John, its the fact
that its not British, I would love it if Cosworth were able to supply an
engine with the reliabily of Mercedes and we would have a thoughly
British car after all fifty years ago we were in the forefront of
engineering excellence with regard to automobile engines. I really
can,t moan as I have an Italian chassis based motorhome, a small French
runaround and a Japanese scooter made under licence in France, oooh now I
see what happened to British industry!!!!

British Bike GP at Silverstone last weekend,
brilliant racing particularly in the lower classes, Glastonbury this
weekend and the sun's shining, what more could you ask, c'mon Sticky get
the kaftan and the beads out and get some rock 'n roll.
Went to the Llama festival (Lynton & Lynmouth Arts and Music,
not a bunch of wooly camels), a couple of weeks ago, a bit more low key
than Glasto, and it's free !! Had a good time, nice weather, some good
bands, plenty of beer, (Shirl drove), what more can you ask for.
Question Steve, if any two out of three, England, Spain, Uruguay,
reach the final who you going to cheer for ? Home country, adopted
country or the one your money's riding on ? Enough to turn a chap
Schitzo !! I wait with baited breath..... lol

Hi all.
Fancy you finding a bronze age flint arrow head on the hallowed turf of a school football ground at Colerne, Graham.
Certainly raises the question as to wheter it was a true bronze age
site with the possibility of finding other artifacts or was the arrow
head a 'one off' possibly imported with a load of turf.
There was a lad in our form at the Tec who came from Colerne, David
Trotman aka Bomber,at that time I believe that he used to spend a
good deal of time with a lad called Polly Gaysford, his people owned a
nursery, (The plant kind) apparently. Don't know if any of this
rings any bells with you.
As a kid, back in trhe 1950s we used to walk to Colerne to attend
the air shows that were held at the RAF station there. These were the
days when it was occupied by Air Transport Command, I believe.
Funny that you should mention Cosworth, Anth, as I was on their
site about three months ago, preparing a quotation for some work they
needed doing on an old Fielding press. Quite a place! They have a 2008
F1 car in their reception area. I believe they have a deal with Frank
Williams this year, or so they said. What surprised me about them was
the relatively small amount of their business that was automotive
related, the rest being work for the aerospace industry.
In case yoiu are wondering, the press was forging aluminium pistons for super bikes when we were there.
It's getting late, have to go now, will chat again before the week end is over.
Have fun.

Good morning everyone
I can tell you are all glued to your TV's when football is on -
not! Have to admit not an ardent football fan but the competitive
side draws me to any sport. My first love is rugby, followed Bath
home and away for 15 years up until the sport went professional. I do
manage to see the occassional 'live' game on my returns to UK. Not the
same now though!!! I can watch any sport from rugby to horse
racing to F1 as long as it is competitive, can't stand friendlys.
With regards to my support Stu, sorry mate I will have to cheer (albeit silently!) for my wallet.
Glasto looks brilliant and I shall be watching later. Give a
cheer for Uruguay this afternoon whilst rummaging about in your bricks
or looking for that old can of WD40 in the shed.
Enjoy the weather!!
Cheers
Steve

Hi Sticky, Gaysfords' Nursery was still in Colerne
when I taught there in the 60s. In fact I had a Gaysford (Jamie) pupil
from there in my class. Also attended those airshows. The bus from
Balustrade terminated at the camp so no walking, but I did often cycle
around there. Recall those great German jets. Still RAF (Hastings)
when I started there. Then after the withdrawal from Aden RAF Regiment
etc. Kids dived under desks if a car backfired outside and I once
confiscated some 'atrocity' photographs going around the playground. In
1988 I arranged a North Wiltshire schools' re-enactment of the 1948
Olympics at Trowbridge Town Football Club. The evening before the
groundsman rang to say the pitch was flooded! I rang the RAF (Junior
Leaders) at Colerne and by morning they had kitted out a hangar as a
full sports arena. Order of the day was 1948 gear. I had cricket
flannels, blazer and loads of Brylcream. As umpire I had the starting
pistol so thought I had better declare this to the guardhouse. B*****s
saw this weirdo from 1948 put a pistol on the desk and the sentry
flattened me! Took me 10 minutes to explain and then the sentry was
playing Cowboys and Indians with the revolver (he only had a pick
handle). (Good job he did not bash me with that!) Rest of the day was a
success (and of course the sun shone!). Football mad future
son-in-law (October) & No.2 daughter here for a barbie tonight. Will
stoke up the jibes about England's performance so far. I wonder if I
can find some German flags to decorate the garden? Graham Graham

Steve I can emphasise with that entirely, wallet
first and foremost, keep on cheering silently. Have you been watching
any of the Glasto coverage ? some of it doesn't appeal, but generally
quite good.

Hi Graham and all.
You are not taking this football thing seriously, are you Graham? I can tell you know.
Now, Stu, you can tell he's serious about Glastonbury and
understandable too, just watching the other festival goers can be an
entertainmemnt in itself I imagine. The Womac festival takes place about
four miles down the road from our event site at Kemble a week before
us. Couple of years ago I was driving past, I will admit the weather had
been a bit miserable, but had cleared up. This creature crossed the
road in front of me dressed in fluorescent green tights and a lilac
ballet tu-tu, with wellington boots? The ensemble did clash with her
multi coloured hair a bit though! I almost drove into the ditch.
That's the trouble with living a sheltered life, it doesn't prepare one for experiences like that.
It was nice to know that Gaysford's meant something to you, I
wasn't dreaming after all then! I often wonder what happened to
'Bomber'. I think I heard that after leaving school he joined the RAF,
but I'm not sure.
I will always remember the air shows at Colerne, as we progressed a
bit we rode bikes but still finished up walking most of the way because
of the hills, Box Hill was a killer!
Whilst on the subject of Box, occasionally we used to go fishing or should I say poaching in Box Brook, after the trout.
Never cought much, not surprising though because in those days the brook was noted for its otter population.
How times change.
Regards to all.
Sticky.
PS.
Glad to hear you are a rugby man at heart Steve, living near to Gloucester as I do I can understand that!

No Sticky, it is hard to take the game seriously! Even
the rugby is not the same since it went professional. Slight fat head
this morning as the family barbecue was a success! Could not find German
flags so I put up pirate bunting (skull & crossbones). Interesting
discussion from the kids about my sanity! At least it was minimal about
the footie. Living in Bath then I recall the push up Box Hill, of
course it was the main London road. Had a bike with a 3 speed Sturmey
Archer (sp?) gear, that weighed a ton. Great going back down except for
the long grind near Shockerwick. Have seen those Womad creatures too!
Son & a previous girlfriend always did Glastonbury. One year two
brown covered tramps rang the front door bell. It was them coated in goo
from head to foot. I hosed them down in the garden before letting them
in. Sometimes several mates would crash out here with them. They would
arrive, clean up, feed and the second they sat down they were all
asleep. They had had a great time. I suspect the By Brook is less
polluted now than it ever was. My kids loved the pool at Slaughterford.
If you drink at the White Hart at Ford you can see the fish from the
little terrace or bridge. Kids are stirring. Must depart. Graham

Uruguay still on course then Steve, and nothing
wrong with the Scissor Sisters, good for a little light relief, didn't
think the second album was as good as the first but the new one sounds
promising.

Hi Stu
Enjoyed the Scissor Sisters set and also agree with your views on
the albums. Will you be watching Stevie Wonder? I am watching Jack
Johnson as I write. Shame about England but they were shite. Come
on Uruguay!!

Hi all.
You've got us all cheering for Uruguay now Steve, not in the
slightest bit interested in the footie though, we just want you to walk
away with the loot. Was the English team really shite or was it the
Johnny foreigner bloke they had at the helm?
Hey, Graham its nice to know that we have so many experiences in
common. The By Brook at Ford was always a favourite place with us also.
When we were kids we always referred to the brook as Box Brook from the
Box area, say just above Mill Lane, down to its confluence with the Avon
at Bathford. Above that was always referred to as the By Brook. I sense
that the proper name is used throughout its length now ie By Brook. Do
you ever go down to Weavern to take the waters? We used to swim there a
good deal as teenagers. It was a good place for crayfish, the indiginous
species, not the American immigrants.
Well have to go now, it's late and I have an early start again in the morning, back to Stoke on Trent for the week.
Be in contact again next week end.
Have fun.
Sticky.
