One of Bath’s oldest firms closed today after 163 years of trading in the city.

Music shop Duck, Son, and Pinker, which first opened in 1848, has shut its doors for the last time.

Hi all

A sad day for all of us Bath teenagers and especially foir Bill as it must evoke many memories of his working there? I am sure we all have a memory of this shop we can share.

Cheers

I agree....very sad indeed! Although I wonder how it kept going as long as it did. Modern youth will never know the joys and anticipation of visiting a record store and the feverish excitement of rushing (more or less guiltily) home to play the latest purchase. Downloads ARE NOT the same!!

Another reason to bother about staying alive has gone.

Bye

Being a cheap-skate I recall those booths where you could listen to the 'Top Ten' for free before buying. You had to push out the girls (bouffant hair, eye-liner like Cleopatra and mini-skirts) to listen to a decent one. Then I would return home without the 45 and listen to Radio Luxembourg anyway!! Somehow I seemed to end up with ex Jukebox discs with the centres punched out. Had a fitting on the 'Garrard' to play them. I wonder what happened to Horace Bachelor?

What? Spelled K-E-Y-N-S-H-A-M. The famous infra-draw method!!!!!!!
This has all a ring of familiarity about it, I believe Bill met him.............
I think it was the subject of discussion once before.
Yep, remember the booths in the record shops, but not the Dusty Springfield look alikes.
I should be so lucky.
Crying shame about Duck Son and Pinker, though. Still I s'pose like many of our childhood memories, overtaken by technology.
Have fun all.
Sticky.

Hello all,
Been up to eyes in other things for a few months, sadly have neglected my computer world and this site. Hope everyone is well and enjoying double-figures weather at last. I`m getting the van ready for the off for next week. Time to use up my annual allocation for diesel fuel and soak up atmosphere elsewhere.

Duck Son and Pinker Ltd; people and places figure big in my memories from that time period of a mispent youth studying sound. Great memories of the Dusty (and busty) Springfield look-a-like babes that hung around the establishment. Mary and Sally Peters who operated the turntables and the booths; I remember them very well. Dave Southall used to run Harmony Hall, Graham Binstead was another musician (drummer?), Tony Durk and his brother used to organise gigs from there (I think). Plenty of interesting people to chat to in those far off days, I never worked there, just lived there for a bit..Ha Ha !

Ah well, time to clean out the septic tank in the van ... catch you all later on ...Byeeeee.

P.S. look up Horace on Wikipedia; or ask Ye Olde Chris Wiltshire, he will telleth all....

Hi all, That is sad news about Harmony Hall closing. I, like many others, spent half our lives in there looking at things we couldn't afford and also having long chats with Dave Southall. He was a lovely bloke and put up with all our antics. Most of the bands of the day used to hang out there, The Spectres, The First Lites and others who I've long forgotten. I did actually by my Hofner Violin bass there in 1967 and I paid the sum of £45. That was around 10 weeks wages for an apprentice like me. I added a 50 watt Marshall amp and a 4x12 speaker cabinet and set myself back £ 135. My Dad couldn't understand why I didn't want to by his Morris 1000 for the same amount. Happy Days !! Cheers all, Rich.

Hello Steve,
No worries mate, spent my time in and out of hospital and on crutches in those days from 1965 to 1968, so no real job for me then, just a lot of time spent studying what makes people tick and how fragile our human relationships with each other really are.

Hence my philosophical outlook on life, do as much as you can while the clock still ticks. Don`t wait until your health goes to pot..Ha Ha !!

Some good news yesterday, had an eye scan, looks like my supposed Macular degeneration is due to faulty brain processing and not an apparent defect in the eyes. Maybe they`ll give me a transplant eh? ... Have fun in the sun... regards
